The layout of the low driving position was dictated by driving pleasure. The aim is for the driver to be able to concentrate on the road, assisted by a head-up display clearly displaying driving information.To promote maximum concentration, the driver of GTbyCITROEN has a head-up display for driving information. Using red LEDs, this system projects key driving information – such as speed and navigation data – onto the windscreen in the driver's direct line of vision. Scientists are increasingly concerned about both the long and short-term effects of air pollution.
The short-term effects include eye, nose and throat irritations, headaches, nausea, and respiratory infections. Among the long term illnesses related to air pollution are lung cancer, emphysema and heart disease.

Air pollution is not new. In 1273 King Edward 1 enacted a law prohibiting the burning of a certain type of coal. This was an offense punishable by death and violators risked losing their heads.

Today, industries and automobiles are the major sources of air pollution. This pollution, which hovers above urban areas, is called smog. Automobiles contribute 1/3 of the substances polluting our air. Primary pollutants emitted from automobiles are carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

When the automobile expels exhaust, the exhaust combines with air and sunlight to produce ground level ozone. The ozone then reacts with the exhaust, forming smog.

In 1998, according to statistics collected by the United States Department of Transportation, Americans drove 2.6 trillion miles. Passenger vehicle miles accounted for over 90% of the
total mileage.

Today, in the United States, vehicle emissions are regulated under the authority of the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA). Since car exhaust is a primary source of pollutants such
as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, vehicles are required to be equipped with emission reducing devices such as catalytic converters. The catalytic converter has a material within that brings about a chemical reaction changing the exhaust emissions into less harmful substances.

However these devices reduce emissions but do not totally eliminate them. The current goal is to have zero emission vehicles, that is a vehicle, which has no tailpipe emissions, no emission control systems capable of breaking down and no gasoline emissions. Several states have adopted zero emission vehicle programs, which require that future vehicles sold in the state be ZEVs.

Major automakers are now developing ZEV's such as electric vehicles, and hydrogen fueled vehicles. The programs also include partial zero-emission vehicles such as hybrid-electric cars and methanol fuel cell powered cars.

The internal combustion engine that is used in most vehicles has only ten percent efficiency. The engine design has seen little change since 1900. And since gasoline prices were low for many years, there was little demand for fuel-efficient vehicles and little motivation to give up the
gasoline powered internal combustion engine.

By contrast, hydrogen powered fuel cells are 60% efficient and do not release pollutants. Our space shuttles have been powered by fuel cells for many years. The price of gasoline has risen
astronomically creating a climate for radical change.

Hybrid cars are appearing on the market. Although these cards do use a small gasoline engine, they are also equipped with an electric motor to deliver extra power when needed.

Electric vehicles are also available and automakers are working on advanced batteries. Vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel are in the developmental stage. Incentives are being offered by city
and state governments to encourage the use of these alternative vehicles. For example, the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power offers discounts on electricity used to recharge
electric vehicles.

As fuel prices rise, and the pollution problem escalates, the auto industry is now serious about developing alternative vehicles so the car of our future may differ dramatically from the car we have now.

I must admit that even I had very mixed feeling on see the early protypes that were spotted in varying states of diguise in the first half of 2001. But as I sit here readying these pages, cropping and resizing the many photos sent to me, I must admit I am quickly being taken by it's design. We must certainly compliment the photographer chosen by Lamborghini whose took the press photos for his remarkable eye in capturing the excitement that will surely spread. Automobili Lamborghini officially opens its Fortieth Anniversary by presenting a ravishing proposal, dedicated to true Italian supercar fans, at Detroit Motor Show.

The Lamborghini Concept Car was designed by Luc Donckerwolke, Head of Lamborghini Design. It continues and exalts the Barchetta concept, an open car of Italian tradition. This Concept Car has a more exclusive, aggressive and extreme design compared to the Murcielago, from which it derives and compared to which is lower by 136 mm.

Its muscular design that interacts with aggressive outlines, makes this Concept Car a total new proposal that heightens the standards of the Lamborghini Design language.

An uncompromising car - as in Lamborghini tradition - inspired by the mythical open racing cars of the Fifties that used to race the Targa Florio or in the Carrera Panamericana.

An extreme and exclusive car also in its upholstery: the streamlined headrests integrate the mobile air intakes and the asymmetrical leather cladding - the right hand side being in a different colour and material compared to the left hand side - thus enhancing the driver oriented cockpit so as to make it a real "Pilot Oriented Driving Machine".

Another feature worth noting is that different structural parts of the chassis have been re-designed to ensure an adequate torsional stiffness even though roofless.

The Lamborghini Concept Car displayed in Detroit continues the tradition of the famous open 12-cylinder models of the "House of the Bull": from the 350 GTS to the Miura Roadster, up to the Diablo Roadster.

The Lamborghini Supertrophy is a monomarque championship held every year on the most famous race tracks, mainly in Europe. Since 1996 the cars competing in the Lamborghini Supertrophy were the Diablo SVR, a special version of the DIablo SV model adapted for racing. After four years of competition the Diablo SVR has proved the extreme reliability of the Lamborghini engines which could stand four racing seasons with no problems. Quite an achievement for an engine designed for road use and brought to the track with no modifications.

Now, to meet the request of the passionate driver participating in the Lamborghini Supertrophy, the House of the Bull is presenting the Lamborghini Diablo GTR, a car based on the Diablo GT, the most powerful produced in series, that will set a new benchmark in the monomarque championships with an engine delivering no less than 590 hp.

system, without catalyser, delivers 590 hp (57In comparison with the Diablo GT, GTR most important features are a modified chassis frame with integrated roll bar, improved suspensions, central fixing nut for the rims, race braking system, additional radiators for transmission oil cooling, very high performance rear wing (directly bolted to the chassis), simplified interiors and weight reduction. Special features of the GTR engine, common to the GT, are:

multi-throttle intake manifold with individual intake system
variable intake valve timing system
dynamic air inlet duct upstream of the intake plenum
titanium connecting rods and lighter crankshaft

Unique specifications of the GTR engine are:

improved exhaust system designed for racing
special calibration of the engine management system.

The tubular chassis frame integrates the roll bar and is directly connected to the rear wing.

The engine management system is based on the proprietary Lamborghini LIE electronic engine control system tuned for racing. Fuel injectioon is sequential multipoint and ignition is static with individual coils. Lamborghini Data Acquisition System, LDAD, and diagnostic functions are integrated in the engine electronic mangagement system.

For the engine cooling, two water radiators in parallel are side mounted to the engine and an engine oil cooler is front mounted as in the Diablo GT. Additional coolers for gearbox and differential oil are installed in order to better match the racing overloads.

The transmission is on the rear wheels through a Lamborghini 5 speed gearbox with one basic gear ratio option and an alternative option for a shorter 5th gear ratio. The gear box lever is in an asymmetric position on the central tunnel in order to be closer to the steering wheel, for better control.The steering system is power assisted.

The front suspension is modified for racing. Shock absorbers and anti-roll bars are adjustable. The rims are lightweight magnesium alloy with central fixing nut and they accept racing type tyres. A special racing fuel tank with fast filling system has been installed.

The braking system is based on the Diablo GT high performance module. New racing brake calipers have been adopted to better match the very severe racing conditions.

Most of the body is carbon fibre made, except for the roof, which is made of steel for torsional rigidity, while the doors are mode of aluminium, for safety reasons.

The cockpit fittings are simplified to meet racing requirements. The driver seat has been moved towards the longitudinal axle of the car, reducing the size of the central tunnel, to ensure a better driving position. Racing switches for ignition and for other functions have been adopted instead of the series push buttons. The fire extinguisher system is installed on the right side of the cockpit with activating switch on the tunnel. The driver's seat is of racing type with a six-point safety belt and the steering wheel is also racing type.

This topless version of the popular Diablo was introduced at the December 1995 Bologna Motor Show for the 1996 model year. It is based on the Diablo chassis but has a completely redesigned

body. None of the body panels are interchangable between the coupe and roadster. The basic style of the carries over from the coupe with a few changes, the most obvious of which is the removable hard top that is easily stowable over the engine cover. Minimal physical effort is necessary to reposition the hard top safely. The roof locks into position electrically in either position.

The interior maintains the user friendly configurations of the coupe with new colors and materials that offer resistance to the adverse effects of the sun and rain, not that anyone would dare leave this beautiful machine out in the rain unprotected.
Unfortunately, the Roadster version
of the Diablo will come to an end with
the final 30 Millenium Edition Roadsters
being made for the year 2000.

The interior upholstery, seats and dashboard, are colour co-ordinated to the colour of the body and the seats have a special trim.

Comfort in enhanced by an electric seat adjustment as well as by the state-of-the-art Alpine audio system integrating a pan-European navigation system. The same integrated system is available for the US market.

All the exterior and interior details are in visible carbon fibre and have been made with a special titanium thread, thus giving the car more of a shine.

Swiss car designer Frank M. Rinderknecht has a fascination with the 1977 film The Spy Who Loved Me, wherein James Bond’s Lotus Esprit was able to drive underwater. In that vein, Rinderknecht’s latest Rinspeed creation is a Lotus Elise converted into “the world’s first real submersible car,” according to the company. The conversion was largely performed by Swiss engineering specialist Esoro.

The mid-mounted combustion engine of the Elise was replaced by three electric motors (powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries)—one provides propulsion on land, the other two drive the screws for navigating the underworld; two Seabob jet drives are located up front, which breathe through special rotating louvers to open and close the water intake. All of which make the sQuba a zero-emissions vehicle.

When driving on land, the sQuba’s stainless coil-over suspension by KW automotive and large Pirelli tires on custom wheels from AEZ should provide better handling than your typical amphibious vehicle.

The sQuba is functional to a depth of 10 meters, but for safety reasons as the car submerges, the interior (done up by Strähle and Hess to be saltwater resistant, with mother-of-pearl trim and diamond-plated, non-slip inlays from KGS Diamond) gets filled with water. In scuba-diving fashion, an onboard tank of compressed air provides oxygen for the occupants. Bathing suits (or water-resistant clothes) recommended.

Austria-based Magna Steyr has been building a variety of vehicles for established manufacturers from its Graz, Austria, factory and is most noted for its expertise in building SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen and BMW’s X3. In fact, it has been tapped by Mini to build a crossover version of its new Clubman.

Magna has decided to showcase its talent at Geneva by offering the next in a series of MILA (Magna Innovation Lightweight Auto) concepts, the Alpin. This box-on-wheels looks as if it’s straight out of Star Wars and is designed to function as a utility or recreational vehicle primarily geared to off-road use. With wheels positioned out at the corners and a high ground clearance, the Alpin is prepared for both light trail runnings or low-speed rock climbing. The lightweight, all-wheel-drive Alpin is capable of handling 45-degree inclines, and despite its seemingly tall profile, has a low center of gravity thanks to the mid-engine layout. The concept is designed to accept either a small hybrid powerplant or a CNG-fueled supercharged engine.

Inside, the Alpin features unique 3+1 seating and a large, panoramic glass roof. Magna designed the vehicle to be assembled from modules, which reduces manufacturing costs. The frame itself consists of straight sections made of composite materials to further reduce weight.

Italdesign Giugiaro Quaranta

Quaranta is Italian for 40 and the name of this innovative concept car from ItalDesign Giugiaro, which was built to commemorate Giorgetto Giugiaro’s 40th year of auto design.

It is the first concept car to incorporate Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive in a mid-engine layout. The idea was to create an extreme, but ecological, 4-wheel-drive supercar with a cabin big enough to accommodate three adults plus an infant.

The midship packaging of the hybrid powertrain enabled Giugiaro to create a one-volume, sleek silhouette shape, which is also critical to minimizing aerodynamic drag. In addition to the slick shape of the vehicle itself, the Quaranta incorporates rear aerodynamic flaps inspired by Formula 1. According to Italdesign, this low wind resistance enables the car to reach a top speed of 155 mph and to accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.0 seconds.

The Quaranta is not simply a design exercise, but rather a way of showcasing the many talents of Italdesign Giugiaro. In addition to developing exterior and interior car designs, the Italian firm offers engineering services for chassis, mechanicals and bodywork, as well as research of the latest in automotive technology, as evidenced by the use of a solar panels to provide additional energy for the hybrid powerplant.

It’s been 20 years since Leonardo Fioravanti left Pininfarina to set up his own design house, so to commemorate the anniversary, he has created the futuristic Hidra concept, a sleek 2-box 5-door study.

Similar in appearance to last year’s Thalia, the Hidra, like most Fioravanti concepts, is designed to showcase a particular technology and not necessarily something found under the hood. The company says simply that the Hidra could be powered by any combination of hybrid powertrains. Indeed, the concept’s spacious cabin and traditional layout could accommodate either existing gasoline/electric combos or future fuel-cell systems.

The novelty of the Hidra, however, is its windshield wiperless glass area. According to Fioravanti, the concept uses a combination of aerodynamics and a special coating to keep the glass surfaces clean. The windows on the car are coated with a special substance that includes “nano dust,” which pushes dirt and water outward to the edges of the glass. When the vehicle reaches a certain speed, this material is blown off the car. The coating also protects the vehicle’s interior from harmful ultraviolet rays that can damage plastic dash surfaces and upholstery. Fioravanti predicts that the coating could be commercially viable within five years.

A plug-in electric car that will be ready for sale by 2010 in Europe, Japan and the U.S.

Legendary Italian design firm Pininfarina has formed a joint-venture with the French Bolloré Group, a major battery producer, to build a plug-in hybrid fuel-cell car that will be ready for sale by 2010 in Europe, Japan and the U.S.

Called Sintesi, the concept offers four seats, four doors and stunning looks in the best Italian tradition. The sleek body has a drag coefficient of just 0.27. Pininfarina said it took a different approach to design that has grown out of the flexible packaging afforded by the electric powertrain. Rather than designing the body around the mechanicals, it has shaped the drivetrain around the passengers. This approach is called “liquid packaging,” which frees the car from traditional shapes, improves weight distribution and lowers the center of gravity.

The various components are distributed around the car, including the lithium-ion batteries and four fuel- cell electric motors positioned near each wheel. The car promises acceleration of 4.8 seconds to 31 mph and a top speed of over 80 mph, according to the makers. City range is claimed to be more than 150 miles, with a full recharge time of five hours; but, if you need only 15 miles of range, just five minutes of charging is needed.
